Overview

The USJ-LEB-AFEE International Academy (ULAIA) is an executive education initiative proposed by the American Foundation for Educational Excellence (AFEE) and implemented by AFEE in partnership with Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ). It is designed to foster in-depth knowledge and diplomatic expertise on Lebanon and the Middle East, and to bridge generations through their rich and diverse cultures and heritage.

Based in the United States and Lebanon, the academy serves professionals aged 21 and above from around the world, with a particular focus on Americans and Canadians interested in Lebanon and the Middle East. The academy's courses are especially beneficial for professionals in the State Department or those working in various embassies who are preparing for assignments in Lebanon or the Middle East. Additionally, the academy targets academics and researchers, international business professionals, NGO and non-profit workers, journalists, media professionals, tourism and hospitality industry workers, government and policy makers, military personnel, Lebanese and Middle Eastern diaspora communities, and cultural enthusiasts.

By providing in-depth knowledge of the region's cultures, histories, languages, and contemporary issues, the academy aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Middle East and offer solutions to its unique challenges.

MISSION

Our mission is to foster in-depth knowledge and diplomatic expertise on Lebanon and the Middle East. We offer comprehensive and interactive online executive education courses that equip professionals, scholars, and enthusiasts with the knowledge, cultural sensitivity, problem-solving skills, and insights needed to engage effectively in the region. By exploring the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contemporary issues of Lebanon and the Middle East, we aim to promote understanding, cross-cultural dialogue, and global connectivity, addressing the unique challenges faced by the region.

LEADERSHIP & STAFF

1- Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer (CEO):
Nada M. Salem

• Responsibilities: The CEO focuses on the overall strategy, financial health, operational management, and external representation of ULAIA, including serving as the primary liaison with key partners.

The CEO is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, partnership development, and operational management of ULAIA. This includes setting long-term goals, ensuring financial stability, and overseeing all aspects of the academy's operations to ensure that it meets its mission and objectives. The CEO also serves as the primary liaison with key partners, including the American Foundation for Educational Excellence (AFEE) and Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ), fostering relationships and ensuring effective collaboration. Additionally, the CEO represents ULAIA in public forums, advocates for the academy's mission, and drives initiatives that enhance its global presence and impact.

2- Chief Academic Officer (CAO):
Nada M. Salem

• Responsibilities: The CAO ensures the academic quality and integrity of the programs, working closely with faculty to ensure presentations are error-free and engaging for audiences.

The CAO oversees the academic integrity and quality of the programs offered by ULAIA. This includes curriculum development, faculty recruitment and development/training, and ensuring that all courses meet the highest standards of academic excellence.

3- USJ Coordinator:

• Responsibilities: The USJ Coordinator ensures effective communication and collaboration between ULAIA and USJ, facilitating joint initiatives and alignment of academic goals.

This position is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the collaborative relationship between ULAIA and Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ). The Liaison works closely with both institutions to ensure alignment on academic goals, program development, and strategic initiatives. This role involves coordinating joint projects, facilitating communication between faculty and staff, and ensuring that the programs offered meet the highest standards of excellence and relevance. The Liaison also plays a key role in organizing joint events, workshops, and conferences, thereby strengthening the partnership and fostering a collaborative environment. Through their efforts, the Liaison ensures that both ULAIA and USJ benefit from shared resources, expertise, and opportunities for growth and innovation.

4- Operations Manager: (TBA) 

• Responsibilities: This position manages day-to-day operations, logistics, scheduling, and coordination of online courses. 

5- Marketing and Communications Manager: (TBA) 

• Responsibilities: This position develops and implements marketing strategies, & manages social media, public relations, and outreach activities. 

6- Student Services Coordinator: (TBA) 

• Responsibilities: This position provides support and services to students, including enrollment, academic advising, and addressing student inquiries and concerns. 

7- IT Manager: (AFEE & USJ) 

• Responsibilities: This position manages the technical aspects of the online platform, ensuring smooth operation of Zoom sessions, technical support, and cybersecurity. 

8- Administrative Assistant: (TBA)

• Responsibilities: This position offers administrative support for the executive team, scheduling, documentation, and correspondence. 

9- Faculty Members (Part-Time): 

• Responsibilities: Faculty members develop and teach courses, assess student performance, and contribute to curriculum development. 

10- Finance Manager: (AFEE & USJ) Depends on where payment is made) 

• Responsibilities: This position manages budgets, financial planning, invoicing, and financial reporting. 

+ BOARD OF ADVISORS (Non-Operational): 

• Responsibilities: Board members provide strategic guidance, support curriculum development, help ULAIA to enhance credibility and leverage professional networks.
